When we said that we were going backpacking through Spain, we literally meant backpacking through Spain! As it turns out, the only way we could get a decent price on airfare was to book the different legs of our journey separately. We would fly from JFK in New York to LHR in London, then to MAD in Madrid. However, on the way there, we would only have an hour and a half in London Heathrow to catch our connecting flight. Normally, an hour and a half sounds like a lot, but in our case, we would have to go from Terminal 1 to Terminal 4, which according to the LHR site, takes an hour and 20 minutes. Because of this, checking in luggage became an issue because there was the possibility that we would catch our connection, but our luggage wouldn't. There were are few options as to how we would handle our luggage, but in the end we decided that we would each bring a backpack with our clothes and do laundry while we were there.
We went to work on Tuesday, July 3rd like usual, with the exception of the enormous backpacks on our backs. At work, I nervously monitored the British Airways site because the day before there had been a car bombing at Glasgow and a suspicious package found in Terminal 4, causing the entire Terminal to be closed for the remainder of the day. As it turns out, 6 hours or so before boarding, our flight was canceled. Thanks to my close monitoring, I found out before a message was sent out to passengers, and was able to call BA and get us onto the last flight of the day into LHR.
We get to JFK and the place is a madhouse, full of people just realizing that their flight had been canceled. Thanks to online check-in and lack of check-in luggage, we breezed through the lines and security with no problems.
Our transcontinental flight on BA was a pleasant surprise. Even in coach, we each had a small television screen and complimentary packet of eye mask, toothbrush, toothpaste, and socks :) Their movie selection wasn't that bad either as they had 300 and Blades of Glory. Thanks to Will Farrell, we found ourselves laughing out loud, much to the dismay of those around us.
